Start with place, time and jurisdiction
Establish the correct parish, county and period before opening a volume. Danish jurisdictions and place spellings change over time, and Copenhagen or Sønderjylland may require a different route from another parish. A census entry can provide the birthplace or residence needed to select the right church book.
Follow the strongest record sequence
Move from censuses to baptisms, confirmations, marriages and deaths in parish registers. After 1814, standardised church books often make event types easier to follow; earlier books may mix events chronologically. Arrival and departure lists can connect a person between parishes when a household disappears from one record set.
Preserve evidence and local context
Record the archive, parish, book, event, page or image and the wording visible in the record. Compare original images with any index and note whether access comes through an archive or a partner. Keep witnesses, occupations and residences because they help distinguish repeated names and support indirect relationships.
